"The Making of an Installation: Considering what constitutes the work of art"
Goddard College
2008
As a result of examining my own recent work, I have come to consider the value of extending the frame of reference of my work to include not just the finished piece, but the discarded, eliminated pieces that are shed in the process of creation. How might artists be participating in a process that results in the creation of "trash” as we make decisions about what is located inside and outside of what we consider to be our art.
"Transgressing Boundaries"
Goddard College
2005
How can artists create expressions that reflect a polycultural identity – one that is between and across genders, races, languages, cultures and communities? How can cultural difference be negotiated in performance? Considering the work of Guillermo Gomez Pena, how does he manifest his conversation on “border crossing” among other issues in his work?
"Performances as Compositions"
Goddard College
2005
An investigation into the frameworks and constructions involved in making meaning through art practice. Look at how framing is manipulated in the political arena and explore how those mechanisms can be applied to an art practice. Look at how the terms used in music composition (instruments, movements, major and minor keys, exposition, development, etc.) are relevant to the creation of visual and performative works.
"Feminist Performance"
Center for Advanced Feminist Studies
University of Minnesota
1994
Set in the context of the history of women’s group theaters, a discussion of the issues of collectivity and leadership, the use of ritual, and struggles with multiculturalism in both organizational structures and in the creative process of women in performance. The discussion will consider how the politics of group structure and identity affected the longest running women’s theater group in the U.S., At the Foot of the Mountain.
